Project Trailers: Each of these will inspire at least one exam question
and maybe more. GET ME YOUR
ONE-PAGE PROJECT WEB SHEETS!!!!! A.S.A.P. Assignment 14-Final
Exam: This has information on the exam,
extra credit, and final homework possibilities. A must read. |
*Complete the assigned readings before the class
meetings.
Warning: This is not a static document. It will be updated each week.
Texts: Please obtain the following 3
books:
1) Munitz, Milton Karl, ed. Theories
of the Universe; from Babylonian Myth to Modern Science, The Library of Scientific Thought.
Glencoe, Ill.,: Free Press, 19XX. At Amazon the price is anywhere from under
one dollar for a used copy to $21.95 for a new copy. You will have to order this online. It was not ordered at the bookstore.
The new copy will probably ship quickly, but the used copies tend to be slowly
processed, so if you buy a used copy you may want to go for the quickest
shipping method. Get this a.s.a.p.
2) LucretiusŐ On the Nature of the
Universe (De rerum natura)
(Penguin Classics) by Lucretius (Author), John Godwin (Introduction), Ronald E.
Latham (Translator). Used copies start at under $3 online. There are numerous
translations of this book and there is even an earlier Latham translation
without the Godwin intro. Make sure you get this Latham
translation with the Godwin introduction. Please have this by 9/12.
3)
McClellan, James E., and
Harold Dorn. Science and Technology in World History: An Introduction. Baltimore, Md.: The Johns Hopkins
University Press, 19XX. This one
ought to be avaliable at the bookstore.
Get this a.s.a.p.
Optional booksÉ
- Ibn Tufayl, Abu Bakr, and Lenn Evan Goodman. Ibn Tufayl's Hayy Ibn Yaqzān: A Philosophical Tale Translated with Introduction and Notes. Translated by Lenn Evan Goodman. New York: Twayne Publishers, 1972.
Amazon lists this in their used bin as Ibn Tufayl's Hayy Ibn Yaqzan: A Philosophical Tale Translated with Introduction and Notes (Paperback) by Muhammad Ibn 'Abd Al-Mal Ibn Tufayl (Author). They give no translator, but it looks to be Goodman and there are many copies available under $10. If you want a hard copy, this will work.
-Koestler, Arthur. The Sleepwalkers : A History of Man's Changing Vision of the Universe. New York: Arkana, 19XX. I will probably assign some readings from this in PDF form, but this book is widely available used and cheap.
-Park, David Allen. The How and the Why : An Essay on the Origins and Development of Physical Theory. Princeton, N.J.: Princeton University Press, 19XX. I may assign some readings from this in PDF form, but this book is widely available used and cheap.
-Other readings will be provided in class or as PDFs
available through this site and its links.
